In this exercise I have been given the following briefs:
1. Cut two ‘L’ of card or stiff paper.
2. Use them to explore formats, to zoom in and out of compositions.
3. Take an image which has a range of content. Enlarge it to A4 .
4. Use the ‘L’ to create edited version of each image. Retain the content buy try presenting it in the different ways in different formats and repeat this using for about 10 times.
I have chosen a picture taken from the Bridgeman Education library.
LAL296848 Harbour Scene (with hidden images) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Harbour Scene (with hidden images). Original artwork for Jack and Jill (issue yet to be identified). Lent for scanning by the Illustration Art Gallery.); © Look and Learn; English, out of copyright
For this picture, Harbour Scene. Unfortunately the two side borders have been trimmed automatic by my printer. Then I have practiced with these ‘L’ cards on the A4 paper but I also used the photoshop to edit it as well.
1st edit I named it: Sale/Selling. There is a striking yellow caravan, something is being sold from caravan. A women is in the front it and she is selling some soft drinks like lemonade or fresh juice.
2nd edit I named it: Childhood. 4 children in this crop, one is playing with a boat in a bucket full of water meanwhile the other one is watching. one boy is playing with some pets and the other girl is maybe just walking through after buying some drinks.
3rd edit I named it: Dance. As this is a very delightful part of the picture because you still can see a little bit sea view down the right side corner. Two and a half buildings are maybe bar, shop or school. The 2 adults and 2 children maybe are a family or teachers and students.
4th edit named: Family. There are mother and her daughters(maybe older daughter and baby son) are passing the street in this harbor. The older girl is copying her mother to look after her little baby toy.
5th edit named: Sleeping(Sleeping man). This man is doing fishing. Maybe he is on holiday or away for the weekend, but having a relaxing day anyway. As It takes time and patience the man is falling asleep.
6th edit named: Fisherman. This man is selling nice fresh fish and seafood and a teenage girl is buying something for her mother to cook dinner.
7th edit: Seaside. What is a beautiful seaside pictures which has a blue sky, green see view, lamp towel, red boat, white house with blue roof, green/yellow hill and a man is working at the harbor.
8th edit: Busy/Busy Scene. On this pleasant footpath, there is a beverage sales booth, children are playing, the man is washing his car and a son is helping his father painting the boat.
9th edit: Sea/Sea View. A seagull is flying over a quiet harbour which is a sunny beautiful place.
10th edit:Peace/Flying/Freely/Sky View. A gull freely in the sky fly.
Well I am pretty sure I got a very easy picture which has lots of elements inside. I can crop some more if I want it.
I am trying to use the first one SELLING and the last one which I am going to use the word PEACE with their thumbnails.
Before I practice my posters I did research about posters and some references which gave me some inspiration.
This is my first practice showing a caravan selling food and drink surrounded with this for playing games
This is the second practice showing images of Malala Yousafzai, guns and the dove of peace I was working with this image and developed it further.
I had an other attempt at lino cutting but I put the words the wrong way round and had to correct with photoshop to flip the words.
For my final last practice I am showing Malala lying down on the back of a dove. I have filled up the body of the dove with the words No War. The forest they are flying over is depicted with the tree trunks as guns and there canopy of the trees in blood red.
This image also reminds me of the last assignment, the exercise about visual metaphors. In this case the dove is a metaphor for peace with the tree trunks and canopy of the trees being the dead in a war.
