I has been asked to send a ‘greetings card’, telling my tutor about myself, my interests and inspirations, the materials I feel happy working with and maybe what I would like to get from the course.
First of all I need to work out what I want to say.
My name is small panda I was born in China and have been in UK about 4.5 years. I live with my husband and lots of soft toys. Since my husband has been to China then he has been called a panda as well.
So our story includes big panda, small panda and lots of toys who came from China. One of the toys is our favorite polar bear called Baixiong who is like a pillow and is our best friend for sleeping.
For this assignment, I am thinking how do I to use my language to say hello or convey the greetings to my tutor. A ceremonial embrace, as a greeting or salutation. Different countries follow different ways like hug and kiss, blow a kiss, shake hands, nose touching nose etc. So I am trying to use some body languages which is from ancient China, a hand symbol or hand gesture.
I tried drawing some pandas to say hello by waving or with a hands symbol/gesture. Then I drew a character of a panda which is a bit like me. I also drew a red Chinese traditional gilet with circle sparkle pattern on. The gilet is to convey a festive atmosphere and makes the picture colourful.
I would like to dedicate this illustration to: the 70th anniversaries of D-day, the Gaza conflict, the school children massacred in Pakistan by Taliban gunmen and those suffering and dying from Ebola. This illustration is also to convey the meaning of one of the worst years for air safety, (6 aircraft incidents, the worst of which were MH370 missing and MH17 crashed). As well as these there was the Italian ferry fire for which at the end of 2014 the rescue is ongoing. The possibility of a terrorist attack that exists around us every day. I really wish everything will be better when 2015 arrives.
2014 is nearly gone but I have felt lots of things have happened to make this year extremely troubled. The 70th anniversaries of D-day, Gaza conflict, Ukraine crisis, Pakistan Taliban gunmen massacred scores of children and Ebola. Ebola is nearly taking place the whole year which is a terrible infection. I really wish everything will be gone when 2015 arrives.
Life is a precious thing, death is the greatest evil.
Respect for life, respect life.
Understand the life and love of life.
Respect for life, respect for others and respect their lives.
I have read the list of artists and found out some of contemporary illustrators’ work. I like E.H. Shephard and Emily Gravett. They all draw the work with anthropomorphism and it seems fascinating.
http://www.just-pooh.com/shepard.html. Winnie the Pooh, all these books were illustrated in a beautiful way by E.H. Shephard which made the books even more magical. E.H. Shepard used pencil or pen and ink to create simple lines then put colour on. After Winnie the Pooh was bought by Disney they produced more colourful and complicated pictures.
When we moved into this house some children’s pictures were stuck on the wardrobe which were from ex-owners’ children. I never thought to get rid of them cos they are old but still are adorable. I have been wondering how can these illustration stay popular for such a long time nearly 100 years especially for children? And it is here to stay? ( will in remain fashionable?)
I have drawn my panda in profile the same as the on of Pooh drawn by E. H. Shephard.

For a contemporary illustrator, I like Emily Gravett who is an author/illustrator of exceptional talent. Twice winner of the Kate Greenaway medal. I do like her sharp wit to draw these anthropomorphic characters in excellent illustrations for children’s books like Wolves, Little Mouse’s big book of Fears, Monkey and Me and The Odd Egg. She draws by pen and water colour then used modern media like photoshop to arrange her illustrations. I am looking forward to seeing more of her work in the future.
I am focusing on this popular illustrated book picture and my work is a relax panda.
